Meet Brysan Bushell, a former Talent RISE participant who leveraged his experience and skills from the program to build an impressive career in logistics. Starting with a customer service role at Hyatt Regency through Talent RISE connections, Brysan’s journey took him to DHL Supply Chain, where he now works as an Account Manager in the technology sector. In this interview, Brysan shares how Talent RISE helped shape his career, his proudest achievements, and his advice for young people seeking valuable employment opportunities.
Can you tell us about your career journey?
My journey has been quite diverse. Currently, I work as an Account Manager at DHL Supply Chain, focusing on technology sector clients, primarily Lenovo. I manage the relationship and operations between DHL and Lenovo across Australia, New Zealand, and parts of the APAC region. My path here was unconventional though—I started with a background in IT, studying it at TAFE in 2019. However, after struggling to secure a position that matched my IT skills, I found Talent RISE and was involved in workshops that helped me polish my interviewing skills. The connection that Talent RISE has with Hyatt Regency helped me transition into hospitality, working as a logistics attendant in events.
This experience in hospitality and events, though initially unexpected, provided essential skills that helped me thrive. Later, during the pandemic, I began working casually at DHL, which soon turned into a full-time role. Within two and a half years, I advanced to an Account Manager role.
How did the skills and experience you gained with Talent RISE contribute to your success?
Talent RISE was crucial in shaping my career readiness. One of the most valuable skills I gained was strong communication. The Talent RISE team provided training through numerous mock interviews and role-play scenarios, which were invaluable. I got the chance to understand interview dynamics and how to approach different situations confidently.
In fact, they even encouraged me to interview for a role within Talent RISE itself, which was unexpected and showed me their commitment to helping young people. Although I didn’t secure that position, the experience left a positive, lasting impression on me.
What are the achievements or milestones you’re particularly proud of?
One standout achievement was earning a supervisor role within my first year at Hyatt Regency and participating in a promotional partnership involving Talent RISE and Hyatt Regency. It was a fantastic opportunity to represent Talent RISE and highlight their mission to support young people. I also appreciated the flexibility that Hyatt provided me, allowing me to explore other work options without limiting my career growth. Achieving the Account Manager role within 2 and a half years at DHL was also a reflection of my determination, which is something I’m also proud of.
What are your goals for the future?
In the next five years, I aim to continue advancing within DHL. Ideally, I’d like to work internationally, especially in rapidly growing markets like Thailand or Singapore. My long-term goal is to become a General Manager within DHL, leveraging the diverse experience I’ve gained in various roles and industries.
What advice would you give young people who are currently struggling with gaining valuable employment?
My biggest piece of advice is to say yes to every learning opportunity, no matter how intimidating it might seem. Embrace flexibility and be open to working in various roles and industries, even if they aren’t exactly where you envisioned yourself. I didn’t expect to enter hospitality, but the skills I gained there, especially in customer service, have been extremely beneficial in my current role. Lastly, remember that every experience can contribute to your growth, so don’t be afraid to explore and adapt.
